Adelaide United have been suffering from one of their worst runs in history after taking just one point in the last five matches. This has put the team eighth in the table after seven matches of the season. They have taken only five points during this period. This has increased pressure on manager Josep Gombau, who has stated that the team is suffering from simple mistakes. The 37-year-old Spaniard was brought to the club in the hope of playing a style of football that is similar to Barcelona. However, a run of just one win in the last seven matches mean that pressure is on the Spaniard.
The team suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of Melbourne during the weekend. After the match, Gombau said that it is easy to see where the team is suffering to get results. According to him, they have been making simple mistakes, which are hurting them at the wrong moment. Gombau felt that his players played extremely well over the course of the 90 minutes, but the small mistakes that they made were taken advantage by Melbourne Victory. The case against Gombau is made stronger due to the fact that Melbourne played with 10 men in the second half after Leijer was sent off.
“I think we did a good game but we make mistakes and these mistakes mean that we lose. But the last 20 minutes of the first half and the first 20 minutes of the second half, I think we played very good football. We have the ball, we have (Victory) in their half and we’re playing in their half and we have possession of the ball. We have chances to score, not one or two, we have many, many,” said Gombau.
Their next match in the league will be against Melbourne Hearts.
