The Australian side Adelaide United experienced one of their worst league starts of the last few years as they won only 1 match out of their initial 9 matches but they have picked themselves up and are now located in the middle section of league standings.
They have received a big boost after receiving news that the Argentinean midfielder Manuel Carrusca has extended his stay with the club for 1 more year. Carrusca had received offers from others teams in the league and had to think about his future and it has been confirmed that he will be playing until the next season with his current club Adelaide United.
Carrusca revealed that one of the reasons on why he decided to remain with the club is because of the playing that they have been implementing in the team and that his family is happy right where they are.
“My family is very happy here. One other reason is now what we are doing on the pitch with the style of play, we have one style and we are working very hard every day on the pitch to learn this style. I love the way that we now want to play and for that I want to stay.” Carrusca said.
The Argentinean midfielder is one of the most important players in the squad of Josep Gombau and his extension with the club means that Adelaide United has a good chance on challenging for the league title on the upcoming season as well as continue charging for the top spots in the current campaign which is reaching its end.
The coach of the club, Josep Gombau stated just how important it is for them to keep hold of Carrusca and many other players.
“He is an important player in our team and also a very good person. It’s important to keep as many players together as we can and maybe we can add just one or two new players for next season, so we will not have so much work to do to introduce the style to a new group of players’’. Gombau revealed.
Adelaide United has secured the services of the veteran Australian striker Ryan Griffiths. The 32 years old player will remain with the club till the ongoing season ends.
Griffiths has played in the A-League in the past as well. He has had a couple of tenures at Newcastle United Jets and both of them were 2-year long.
His first tenure at Jets was from 2002 to 2004 during which he made 52 league appearances for them and scored 11 goals, while, his second tenure was from 2011 to 2013 during which he played 55 league games and found the back of the net 19 times.
He had been playing in China since the last few months for Beijing Baxy.
Adelaide United is lacking attacking options at the moment as quite a few of their strikers are on the sidelines because of injury. That’s the reason why they approached Griffiths and signed him.
However, Griffiths’ medical test is yet to be done. He might be going through the test at some point of time tomorrow.
Michael Petrillo who takes care of the football operations of Adelaide United looked quite happy while announcing the signing of Griffiths in a press conference earlier today. He said, “Ryan has got a huge amount of experience and our head coach believes that he is suitable for the brand of football that we play. His arrival will certainly make our squad more flexible.”
Griffiths is supposed to reach Adelaide tomorrow and he might make his debut for the Reds this weekend in the game against Brisbane Roar. That game will take place at the Suncorp Stadium.
Adelaide United has won only 3 out of the 13 games that they have played in the A-League this season and their current position in the points table is no. 8.
Adelaide United have been suffering from one of their worst runs in history after taking just one point in the last five matches. This has put the team eighth in the table after seven matches of the season. They have taken only five points during this period. This has increased pressure on manager Josep Gombau, who has stated that the team is suffering from simple mistakes. The 37-year-old Spaniard was brought to the club in the hope of playing a style of football that is similar to Barcelona. However, a run of just one win in the last seven matches mean that pressure is on the Spaniard.
The team suffered a humiliating 3-0 defeat at the hands of Melbourne during the weekend. After the match, Gombau said that it is easy to see where the team is suffering to get results. According to him, they have been making simple mistakes, which are hurting them at the wrong moment. Gombau felt that his players played extremely well over the course of the 90 minutes, but the small mistakes that they made were taken advantage by Melbourne Victory. The case against Gombau is made stronger due to the fact that Melbourne played with 10 men in the second half after Leijer was sent off.
“I think we did a good game but we make mistakes and these mistakes mean that we lose. But the last 20 minutes of the first half and the first 20 minutes of the second half, I think we played very good football. We have the ball, we have (Victory) in their half and we’re playing in their half and we have possession of the ball. We have chances to score, not one or two, we have many, many,” said Gombau.
Their next match in the league will be against Melbourne Hearts.
